A supplemental affidavit for probable cause said Washington told an IPFW Police officer that as the two vehicles neared the intersection of Hobson and Stellhorn, Washington's vehicle then struck the side of the red pickup that Nellum was in. Witnesses told police they saw no shots fired from the victim's car, nor were any shell casings or firearms found in that vehicle.
Washington is being held in the Allen County Jail in lieu of a $50,000 bond. His next court appearance is June 6 for a hearing.
Haley M. Nellum, a happy, teenager beloved by her family and friends, a sophomore at Bishop Dwenger High School who played on its basketball team, loved to dance and take photos, and spent time serving her community, will be buried today.
That such a person would become a wholly collateral victim of what began as an argument and shooting incident outside a bar might seem most unlikely. She was definitely in the wrong place at the wrong time. But if a 17-year-old driving her car at Stellhorn and Hobson roads is in the wrong place, she is a grim reminder that we all are at risk.
The fight and shooting that led to Nellum’s death in a car accident a few minutes later was violence of a kind that hasn’t gotten much attention lately: the truly random kind.
According to charging documents, 35-year-old Jeremy D. Washington was in the Corner Pocket Pub near St. Joe and St. Joe Center roads when he and two friends got into an argument with three others. They were asked to leave the bar. But the altercation continued in the parking lot and led to Washington pulling out a .45-caliber handgun and shooting one of the men, authorities say.
Racing away from the scene, it’s alleged, Washington ran a red light and plowed into Nellum’s car. A blood-alcohol test showed Washington’s blood-alcohol level at nearly double the legal limit.
Capt. Kevin Hunter, who heads the city’s Gang and Violence Task Force, said none of those involved in the shooting the night of March 28 are known to be gang members. (The very next night, in the same neighborhood, the Gang and Violent Crime Task Force investigated an altercation at the Peanuts bar in which a man was hospitalized with gunshot wounds.)
The Corner Pub, a pleasant place for a sandwich or a friendly game of pool, is hardly the only local establishment where drinking has led to violence, and nothing suggests that anything but bad choices by the protagonists involved bear responsibility for this tragedy.
But it’s a good moment to remind those who operate bars that they need to do what they can to keep things civil and safe both inside and outside their establishments. Don’t overserve patrons. Keep an eye out for trouble. And worry about what happens in the parking lot.
Law-enforcement leaders want to see owners and managers take a little more responsibility for what goes on inside and outside their establishments.
“I’d like to see them step up their game a little bit,” Fort Wayne Police Chief Garry Hamilton, speaking about bars in general, said this week. “If they think there’s a problem, give us a call.”
If they can’t control their patrons, they should expect that police will step in, even if that’s perceived as bad for business.
“One of the owners (of a local bar) got upset that we were there in the parking lot, trying to do police work,” he said.
Perhaps the best way to honor young Haley Nellums would be for everyone to become a little more aware of how dangerous it is to drink and carry a gun, or to drink and drive, or, God forbid, to do both.

On Saturday, 03/29/2014, at approximately 12:04 AM, the City of Fort Wayne Police Department responded to the intersection of Stellhorn Road and Hobson Road reference a vehicle crash with injuries. Officers arrived and located the two crash vehicles south of the intersection on Hobson Road. The driver of the vehicle that was traveling southbound Hobson Road was able to exit the vehicle. His passenger was trapped in the vehicle and required assistance from the Fort Wayne Fire Department exiting the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle that was traveling eastbound Stellhorn Road was unconscious and unresponsive when officers arrived. Paramedics and fire personnel pronounced the victim deceased at the scene. Paramedics transported the driver to a local hospital in fair condition and his passenger to a local hospital in serious condition.
Just prior to the vehicle crash, at approximately 12:01 AM, officers were dispatched to 3215 St. Joe Center Road, the Corner Pocket Pub, reference a subject firing a weapon. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and observed two vehicles exit the parking lot southbound at a high rate of speed.
Shortly after the vehicle crash, at approximately 12:19, a shooting victim arrived at the Parkview Hospital Emergency Room at 2200 Randallia Drive. Officers observed the vehicle the victim was transported to the hospital in had a bullet hole(s) on its exterior. The shooting victim was transported by Paramedics from Parkview Randallia to another local hospital in serious condition. The victim told Detectives he was in the parking lot of the Corner Pocket Pub when he was shot.
Preliminary reports indicate these three investigations are related. It appears the occupants of the vehicle that caused the crash were involved in an altercation at the Corner Pocket Pub. One of the occupants in the suspect vehicle fired gunshots in the parking lot that struck the shooting victim. The suspect vehicle then fled the parking lot southbound at a high rate of speed. Witnesses reported the vehicle disregarded the red stoplight at the intersection of Stellhorn Road and Hobson Road and struck the vehicle traveling eastbound Stellhorn Road.
Hobson Road remained closed to all traffic between Stellhorn Road and Timberhill Drive while investigators processed the scene and collected evidence. The roadway was reopened at 5:31 AM.
Detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and have the suspect, Jeremy D. Washington, in custody. Alcohol was a factor in this fatal vehicle crash. This incident remains under investigation by the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office. There are no additional details regarding this investigation at this time. The Allen County Coroner's Office will release the victim's identity.

Bar fight leads to shooting, then teen’s traffic death
Even though Bishop Dwenger High School is on spring break, officials will open the school Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. for students to come together to talk or seek counseling as they deal with Haley Nellum’s death.
Students are asked to bring photographs of Nellum to create a memory book for her family.
There will be staffers from Erin’s House for Grieving Children on hand Monday and April 8, according to a release from the high school.
If students need help and are unable to use the services provided at the school Tuesday or Saturday, they or their families may call Erin’s House at 260-423-2466.
A teenager, with a brand-new driver’s license, dead in a violent collision at a red light. A man unconscious with a bruised lung. And a Wolcottville man with a bullet hole in his neck.
That is some of the damage done by Jeremy D. Washington, according to court documents, after a drunken fight and flight in the early morning hours Saturday.
Now the 35-year-old New Haven man faces eight preliminary charges – including aggravated battery and reckless homicide – after an argument at the Corner Pocket Pub escalated far beyond the parking lot, enveloping the family of a high school student who happened to be out for a drive.
According to court documents filed Monday, Washington and Chad Jackson, of Wolcottville, got into an argument at the Corner Pocket Pub, a pool hall at 3215 St. Joe Center Road.
Jackson was there with two other men, and Washington was with Clayton DeLong. According to court documents, Washington and Jackson began to argue, eventually being asked to leave by security. When Jackson and his friends went to leave the parking lot, they found Washington blocking the way out, according to court documents.
More words were exchanged, and Washington pulled out a gun and began firing into an SUV in which Jackson was riding. Glass shattered, and Jackson told the other men in the car he’d been shot. As they drove him to a hospital with a bullet wound to his neck, Washington took off at a high rate of speed, according to court documents.
He made it about 3 miles down the road and then barreled through a red light, smashing his 2011 Infinity into the side door of a 2004 Toyota driven by 17-year-old Haley Nellum. The force of the crash was so significant, it sent the Toyota south on Hobson Road and caused it to flip over, according to court documents.
Nellum was a sophomore at Bishop Dwenger High School and a member of the girl’s varsity basketball team. She was on her way from a friend’s home and died at the scene of the crash, about a half-mile from her house.
DeLong, a passenger in Washington’s car, was knocked out cold by the crash and suffered a bruised lung and cut to his head, according to court documents.
Washington told police he had to drive fast because he was in an argument in which someone had fired a gun at him. He told police he retrieved his own gun, a .45-caliber Sig Sauer Nightmare, and fired shots at the other car as well. But investigators believe Washington’s statements were made merely to justify why he was driving that way, according to court documents.
Doctors removed the bullet from Jackson’s neck, which they said just missed his main arteries, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Washington’s blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent when he was examined at the hospital, nearly two times Indiana’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.
In addition to reckless homicide and aggravated battery, Washington is preliminarily charged with two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness, two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and two counts of causing death while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Washington remains in the Allen County Jail on bail of $130,000. Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges against him.

Court records detail an altercation that took place at a Fort Wayne bar before one of two vehicles fleeing the scene was involved in a crash that killed a high school student.
Jeremy D. Washington, 35, of the 3500 block of Scarborough Drive in New Haven, is charged with operating while intoxicated causing death, aggravated battery and criminal recklessness causing serious bodily injury.
Washington is accused of causing a crash at Stellhorn and Hobson roads that killed Haley Nellum, who was a passenger in another vehicle. Court documents say he had a blood-alcohol level recorded after the crash of 0.15 percent. According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Allen Superior Court, during a police interview Washington told officers that he did not think he was drunk and that he had been trying to get away from someone shooting at him who was chasing him in a car.
At around 12:01 a.m. Saturday, officers were dispatched to the Corner Pocket Pub, 3215 St. Joe Center Road, in reference to a person firing a weapon. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and saw two vehicles leave the parking lot and go southbound at a high rate of speed.
According to the probable cause affidavit the following occurred:
A Wolcottville man, who sustained a serious neck wound, told police he was brought to a hospital by two other men. One of the men told an officer that the victim and another man were in the Corner Pocket Pub when they got into an argument with Washington and another person. They were all asked by security staff to leave. The witness told police they were about to leave the parking lot when a man blocked their way. According to court records:
The man told the officer he said, “What the hell, man, what's up?” Washington then said something and started firing shots at them while he was in a white 2007 Chevy Tahoe. The witness said he didn't remember what the gun looked like did does he know how many shots were fired. He said that the victim, who was sitting in the passenger's seat, said “I'm hit, take me to the hospital,” at which time he drove to a hospital.
The other witness told police after they left the bar he got into the rear passenger seat of the car with the victim, and then he saw Washington and the car's driver exchange words, according to court documents. The next thing he said he saw was Washington pulling a silver handgun and firing three shots toward the vehicle, which broke the passenger's-side window, and the glass from the windows covered his body and caused several minor lacerations to his face, stomach, chest and forearm. The man said he heard the victim say, “I've been hit,” according to court records.
Police had earlier released that at around 12:19 a.m., the victim arrived at Parkview Hospital's emergency room at 2200 Randallia Drive. Officers saw the vehicle he was brought in had at least one bullet hole on its exterior. Paramedics took the victim to another local hospital in serious condition.
According to the court documents, Washington told officers he had been in a verbal altercation with the men at the Corner Pocket Pub, but said he left to avoid problems. Then while he was in the parking lot the man he was arguing with approached him while he was in his vehicle and words were exchanged.
The victim said the two vehicles were 1 to 2 feet apart when shots were fired at which time he grabbed his Sig Nightmare .45-caliber semi-automatic handgun that was between the driver's seat and the front console and fired one to eight times at the rear of the guy's vehicle at an angle just to scare him away. The victim said he left the parking lot at a high rate of speed southbound on St Joe Center Road and believed the gunman was following him. Washington was then involved in the fatal crash and police detained him. His passenger was trapped in the vehicle and required help from the Fort Wayne Fire Department to get out.
Washington was held at the Allen County Jail in lieu of a $40,000 bond.

That is some of the damage done by Jeremy D. Washington, according to court documents, after a drunken fight and flight in the early morning hours Saturday.
Now the 35-year-old New Haven man faces eight preliminary charges – including aggravated battery and reckless homicide – after an argument at the Corner Pocket Pub escalated far beyond the parking lot, enveloping the family of a high school student who happened to be out for a drive.
According to court documents filed Monday, Washington and Chad Jackson, of Wolcottville, got into an argument at the Corner Pocket Pub, a pool hall at 3215 St. Joe Center Road.
Jackson was there with two other men, and Washington was with Clayton DeLong. According to court documents, Washington and Jackson began to argue, eventually being asked to leave by security. When Jackson and his friends went to leave the parking lot, they found Washington blocking the way out, according to court documents.
More words were exchanged, and Washington pulled out a gun and began firing into an SUV in which Jackson was riding. Glass shattered, and Jackson told the other men in the car he’d been shot. As they drove him to a hospital with a bullet wound to his neck, Washington took off at a high rate of speed, according to court documents.
He made it about 3 miles down the road and then barreled through a red light, smashing his 2011 Infinity into the side door of a 2004 Toyota driven by 17-year-old Haley Nellum. The force of the crash was so significant, it sent the Toyota south on Hobson Road and caused it to flip over, according to court documents.
Nellum was a sophomore at Bishop Dwenger High School and a member of the girl’s varsity basketball team. She was on her way from a friend’s home and died at the scene of the crash, about a half-mile from her house.
DeLong, a passenger in Washington’s car, was knocked out cold by the crash and suffered a bruised lung and cut to his head, according to court documents.
Washington told police he had to drive fast because he was in an argument in which someone had fired a gun at him. He told police he retrieved his own gun, a .45-caliber Sig Sauer Nightmare, and fired shots at the other car as well. But investigators believe Washington’s statements were made merely to justify why he was driving that way, according to court documents.
Doctors removed the bullet from Jackson’s neck, which they said just missed his main arteries, according to court documents.
According to court documents, Washington’s blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent when he was examined at the hospital, nearly two times Indiana’s legal limit of 0.08 percent.
In addition to reckless homicide and aggravated battery, Washington is preliminarily charged with two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury, criminal recklessness, two counts of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, and two counts of causing death while operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Washington remains in the Allen County Jail on bail of $130,000. Prosecutors have not yet filed formal charges against him.
Washington appeared in Allen County court Thursday, and was also formally charged with reckless homicide, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing death, operating a vehicle while intoxicated causing serious injury and aggravated battery.
Washington originally bonded out of jail, but was taken into custody again Thursday morning on the new charges. His bond was initially set at $130,000 and was bumped up to $170,000 after the court hearing Thursday. He has since bonded out again.

Trying to come to grips with a horrific fatal traffic crash.
We spoke on Monday to the mother and best friends of a Bishop Dwenger High School student killed early Saturday.
A New Haven man is accused of driving drunk and causing the crash.
Police say he was speeding away from a bar shooting.
That early morning shooting at the bar sparked a series of events that led to Haley M. Nellum, 17, of Fort Wayne, dying from blunt force trauma after being hit by another car at the intersection of Stellhorn & Hobson Roads just after midnight Friday night, according to the Allen County Coroner's Office.
Police were dispatched to the Corner Pocket Pub, 3215 St. Joe Ctr. Rd., on reports of gunshots. Witnesses tell police that two vehicles sped southbound out of the parking lot.
Shortly after the incident at the Corner Pocket Pub, at 12:04 a.m., authorities responded to the crash at Stellhorn Road & Hobson Roads.
Witnesses tell police that a vehicle driven by Jeremy Washington, 35, of Fort Wayne, was heading southbound on Hobson Road, ran a red light and hit Haley's car, which was heading eastbound on Stellhorn Road.
Haley died at the scene.
Washington claims he was speeding, fearing that those in the other car were hot on his trail.
At approximately 12:19 a.m. the Fort Wayne Police Department was notified a shooting victim arrived at a hospital. Officers found bullet holes in the vehicle that transported the victim.
Chad Jackson was shot in the neck.
Those with Jackson say Washington fired the shot that struck Jackson.
Washington claims those in the other car fired at him first.
Washington was arrested and is preliminarily charged with eight counts, including aggravated battery, drunk driving causing death, and reckless homicide.
Haley was a student at Bishop Dwenger High School, where she played basketball.

Hobson Road was closed between Stellhorn Road & Timberhill Drive for about 5 hours.
